MY STORY
My journey to better metabolic health changed the way I practice medicine.
I didn’t come to metabolic health only through textbooks, guidelines, or clinical practice. I also came to it through my own experience.
THE BEGINNING

My own health transformation
My own health was heading in the wrong direction.
In my early 30s, despite being a physician, my own metabolic health was moving in the wrong direction. I had gained about 35 pounds, developed high blood pressure, was approaching prediabetes, and struggled with recurrent back pain.
Like many people, I had accepted some of this as part of getting older and being busy. But I was also taking care of patients with many of the same metabolic conditions every day, often managing each condition individually with medication while the underlying metabolic disease continued to progress.
Eventually, I began questioning whether the conventional approach was addressing what was actually driving these problems — including my own.
THE TURNING POINT
Changing nutrition changed my health.
When I changed the way I ate and approached my lifestyle, the results were significant. I lost about 35 pounds. My blood pressure normalized, my blood sugar normalized, and the recurrent back pain that had become part of my life resolved.
What struck me most was that these problems did not improve independently. They improved together.
That changed the way I thought about obesity, high blood pressure, prediabetes, and other metabolic conditions. Rather than seeing them as separate diagnoses, I began to see how often they were connected by the same underlying metabolic dysfunction.
It pushed me to look much more deeply at the role of nutrition, insulin resistance, satiety, body composition, and lifestyle in both the development and treatment of chronic disease.
THE REALIZATION
It also changed the way I practiced medicine.
For years, I worked as a hospitalist, caring for patients with the downstream complications of obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver, and cardiovascular disease.
Modern medicine is exceptionally good at treating acute illness and managing complications. But I became increasingly interested in what could be done earlier — before patients reached that point.
I saw how often chronic metabolic conditions were treated as separate problems: one medication for blood pressure, another for blood sugar, another for cholesterol, while weight and metabolic health continued to worsen.
My own experience had shown me that changing nutrition and lifestyle could affect several of these problems at the same time. I wanted to bring that approach more deliberately into my medical practice — while still using targeted testing, medications, and the tools of conventional medicine when appropriate.
WHERE I AM TODAY
This experience now shapes the way I care for patients.
Today, I practice Internal Medicine with a focus on metabolic health and lifestyle medicine. I use nutrition and lifestyle as primary therapeutic tools, while also incorporating targeted testing, medications, and other medical treatments when appropriate.
My approach is centered on identifying the metabolic drivers behind conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver, and other cardiometabolic problems — then addressing them together rather than treating each one in isolation.
My own experience showed me what meaningful lifestyle change can accomplish. My medical training allows me to apply those tools in the context of a patient’s complete health. That combination now guides the way I practice medicine.
